"Solo Performance" original oil 6x6"

Ellipses are really, really tough. It is amazing how easy it is to get them wrong. I find I rarely paint them without having to make several minor adjustments in my drawing until things read properly. Painting them from life is even harder than from photos, because if you change your angle of view even slightly, the curves change. It's such valuable drawing practice, I find it's great to try lots of them from lots of different perspectives to build on these skills.

  1. Yes Liz - I'm right with you on this! Ellipses are tough. You know the second they're out, and often I revise and revise and then I've completely lost them and I have to back to the beginning. With a pencil it's one thing, but as soon as you're dealing with paint build-up, the whole process can go south pretty quickly. This piece of yours is fresh and really lovely.

  2. This is lovely! Painting glass is still a challenge for me. Now I have a beautiful example to study!

  3. Thanks Sheila! I find what helps with painting glass is to simplify it a bit, I don’t try and paint all the patterns and reflections or I’ll go kooky! I squint and whatever patterns and shapes I can still see are the ones I try to paint. This seems to work well with pretty much any subject.

  4. sometimes one sees a painting and thinks "I wish I'd painted THAT". This, for me, is one of those times. I like everything about it.

  5. You certainly got everything right in this one...so beautiful! Love the way the stem zig-zags and disappears for that flash second. And the vase is mesmerizing. The reflections and distortions within the water are wonderful.

Oh yes! The horrors of ellipses. My stomach got a knot when you talked about slight change of point of view.
