100 plein air paintings in 100 days - #100

#100 - "And to All a Goodnight"
Original Oil 6x8"

10/07/17 (10:15pm)
This is not what it looks like - a fishing expedition to see if I could find Darrin again... I was actually on a side road BESIDE the highway, not on the highway - which enabled me to paint outside of the car, always better.

I see this view every evening when I drive home from the studio, and always love it, so it seemed fitting to paint it for my last piece of the project. Hadn't planned on putting cars in, but as they kept streaming by while I was painting, they started to feel like an essential part of the subject, so in they went. One thing I have discovered during the project is that I LOVE painting plein air nocturnes, more to come for sure!

Many of you have been commenting or writing to congratulate me on finishing the project. It really wouldn't have been nearly such a great experience without you (that includes the silent ones of you watching from the sidelines). Lots of people have also mentioned they will be sad to see it end, and I want you all to know that it's not ending, just changing. I will continue this blog with the intention of posting interesting paintings and sharing insights and stories that I hope will inspire and captivate you, so please check in from time to time to see what's new!

Sending out a HUGE heartfelt thank you for your interest and support! You guys made it fun, and kept me going on every level from painting them to posting and writing about them. This project was one of the coolest things I've done recently, I'm so glad I took it on, and so glad you followed!

PS: I will be publishing a book, both a softcover and hardcover version, of this project in the near future and will post about it here when it's ready to roll.

There is no question in my mind that your new works will be incredible! Can hardly wait to see! And sign me up for a coffee table book!

Loved the story of the police escort too.

  5. Whoop whoop! Great way to finish, Liz. These nocturnes are your forte in my mind. You capture the light and atosphere beautifully. I can't wait to see more and to see what comes after this painting marathon. A very well done, once again and I look forward to the book!

  7. I was also was watching from the sideline. This particular painting reminds me of my fist trip to Colorado driving through the mountains at night and seeing headlights of cars coming down the mountain road.

I loved reading about all your experiences, photos and the "7 key things" you learned along the way that I must memorize!

    Great job, Liz!

  20. Liz, I left a comment but it is not showing up, so I will try again. This is the perfect painting to end this incredible challenge - the colors are fantastic, and I love the little bits of light from the tail-lights of the cars.
I followed your exceptional work before your challenge, and even though I am going to miss this great challenge you accomplished, I look forward to following your work as you move on!
Congratulations on a job well done!

Your journey has encouraged me to keep going with plein aire. I paint with a wonderful group every week here on Eastern Long Island, NY. This summer was a complete adventure. Some of my pieces are only good memories of the site we visit and very few are the ones I'm happy with. Your comments on struggles, doubts, successes and failures are right on. They reinforce what plein aire painters struggle with in placing every stroke. I especially loved your notes on "wiping out and starting over"...I do a lot of that. Thank you so very much for sharing.

  23. Wow. Just - wow. Were you also working another job throughout this project Liz? Or was this your full-time work through it? (Please tell me it was!?) If it wasn't, I've got to ask how the heck you found time to do this?!

    1. Hi Cheryl, I actually traveled twice to teach/take workshops during the project, and incorporated the 100in100 into those trips.
