#70 - "Rain Approaching"
Original Oil 6x8"
10/07/02 (6:30pm)
I LOVE painting storms! There is wild energy bouncing around, the air is electric, and things are moving fast. I was driving back to the mountains from Calgary when I saw this storm moving across the foothills and had to stop and paint it. I initially set up outside but then thought better of it and jumped in the back hatch of my car to paint, good thing because halfway through it was pouring rain. SO much fun!
#71 - "West to Banff"
Original Oil 6x8"
10/07/02 (8pm)
Once the storm passed I set up outside of the car in the same spot and painted the clearing sky. Such great light after a storm, and I've always loved the view heading into the mountains, the clouds and the land seem to go on forever.

Both are so lovely in their own way, especially the freshness of the scene after the storm. Only an artist would fine it fun to hang out the back of a car on a stormy day!
ReplyDeleteI love the storm painting Liz. I used to bundle up in a quilt and watch the thunderstorms come racing in breaking the intense heat in Illinois. I love the foothills and hope to take Bruce up the 22 highway. He hasn't been on it yet. That is my summer goal! And to take photos and paint. Keep up the good work. This is a great idea for a series.
ReplyDeleteFantastic work, Liz. Especially like the second painting - the way you've captured the sunlight on the clouds is wonderful.
ReplyDeleteLove the storm painting, full of drama, rich colour and atmosphere. Your work is very inspiring. I love a good landscape painting and have really enjoyed following along on your journey. Thanks for all of the insights.
ReplyDeleteBoth of these are soooo good, Liz! Fantastic job of capturing that almost transparent look of the sheet of rain. And the glow in the "after" painting...gorgeous. What an adventure you are on!
ReplyDelete"West to Banff" is incredible. Love the warm greens in contrast to the cool sky. Your landscapes are getting better and better.

ReplyDeleteI just stumbled onto your site (through carol marine'ssite) Your 6x8 landscapes have inspired me. I have always painted large landscapes and love painting nature .Most recently I have taken up painting small daily paintings. I didn't think landscapes fit well as subject matter for such small paintings so I have been doing little still lifes...until I saw these landscapes you have done.. They are wonderful! And I feel compelled now to try a few. Thanks for the inspiration.
Thanks so much for all your great comments, it really means a lot that people are following this project, gives me a kick in the butt on those days I don't feel like going!
ReplyDeleteBrian, it is amazing how big a 6x8" canvas starts to feel once you've done a few! At the same time I look forward to stretching out on some bigger canvases plein air once the project is wrapped up.
