100 plein air paintings in 100 days - #72/#73 (and just crossed the finish line!)

#72 - "Blast of Summer"
Original Oil 6x8"

10/07/03 (7pm)
This was SUCH a difficult subject, and I made it even harder than I thought I would! Really took a lot of painting in circles to get it right, but it was a great challenge to tackle a more intimate plein air subject.

I think my brushwork on this one shows how fast I was working to capture the fleeting light!

I am super excited to announce that at 11:15pm on July 17th (day 100), I finished the last painting of the project! Yay! In total I painted 115 paintings in 100 days including wipers - some were just not meant to see the light of day.

For those of you wondering why I am only at #73 in posting, I started the project on April 9th, but knew I was going out of town for the last two weeks of April, so I didn't begin posting until May 1st.

I learned SO much from this project and will continue to share my insights as I post the final 27 paintings.

  1. CONGRATULATIONS Liz!!! I have loved following this from day 1. Look forward to the rest and then for your top 10 (you're still going to do that right? I think it would be very interesting to see which were your favourites). Way to go!!

  3. Thanks Kim! It sure feels great to know I did it (there were moments of doubt nearing the home stretch as I kept wiping and getting farther behind). And you bet, I will do a top 10 list when they're all posted. Thank you SO much for following!

  7. Thank you all for your support and enthusiasm, it has buoyed me on through out the project!

Amanda, I thought about a reward, and I can honestly say the best one is the increased confidence I have gained in my plein air work. I had very little at the outset of the project, and the desire to build it was one of my main motivators for diving in. Mission accomplished!

  9. Way to go Liz. This was an incredible project with some really wonderful art produced. Your skills have always been great, but I understand your increased confidence level having worked through so many different conditions and subjects in a relatively short time frame. Thanks for the thoughts and inspiration.

  10. Congrats Liz! Pretty amazing accomplishment. It was fun watching your progress and hearing all the crazy situations you worked through. Bravo! What's next? I think you should hike the whole Appalachian trail and paint at least two or three paintings a day as you do so.

  12. I think you should tell people what crappy weather we have had for most of your project -then they would REALLY appreciate the great work you have done on this project! It was fun to share it with you, both online and painting alongside you. Thanks for the great experience.

  13. Well done Liz - You certainly inspired me to get out in the evenings and paint. It's amazing what the initiative of one person can do. I'm looking forward to the workshops. Thanks

  15. Liz,
Thank you for taking on this crazy project. I've looked forward to receiving each and every little gem in my inbox and enjoyed reading every word of this journey of yours. How thrilling for me to have met you and to have painted with you on a few of these occasions...to know you is to know how successful it ultimately would be.
I'm with Carol...hiking the Apalachian trail and painting 3 or 4 paintings as you go. For you, a piece of cake ;) I really look forward to seeing your new body of work which I'm sure will be spectacular.

  16. Congratulations, Liz! I have enjoyed this so much, and look forward to seeing the rest of the paintings. And thanks for including these on the special page on your website. It will make them easier to pull up for future reference. But I think I'll come back a few months after all are posted and read the posts again as well. I learned so much the first time I'm sure a review will be warranted.

Looking forward to having you down east to teach daily painting a la plein air for us next next summer!

  19. Well done, Liz. To do 100 paintings in 100 days is in itself a great achievement, but to do 100 paintings of such consistently high quality is truly outstanding. It's been a real pleasure following along. I look forward to seeing the remainder as they go up. All the best.
