100 plein air paintings in 100 days - #95/#96

#95 - "View from the Leighton"
Original Oil 6x8"

10/07/16 (5pm)
Wow - I just got such a pang in my heart typing in #95. Really hit me that this is almost over. It has been such a great experience, and wouldn't have been nearly as special if not for all of you following, so thank you SO much for your interest, support and enthusiasm, it has meant the world to me.

Here was my BIG learning on this one: use the opportunity of working on a small canvas to create depth, movement and interest with brushwork. The foreground triangles of this piece were painted fairly flatly, and then somewhere near the end it occurred to me to throw in some expressive brushwork. I couldn't believe how much energy and space were created with those 5 or 6 simple marks.

#96 -"Evening Warmth"
Original Oil 6x8"

10/07/16 (8pm)
I LOVE this painting. It's the same day and location as "Summer Greens" (#93). As you can see, it turned out to be a beautiful evening.  What I find most interesting about plein air painting is that often I can look at a piece months or years later and remember the moment it was painted so vividly. The air temperature, the sounds and smells, who I was with, exactly how I was feeling. They're like little canvas time machines, magical doors into moments lived. This is why I am compelled to hold a few of these back for my own collection, they are a record of such valuable moments in my life, and worth so much more than any money I could exchange them for.

  2. Really phenomenal work, Liz. They both have such an incredible sense of place - I feel as though I have been there, but through your creative perspective.

  3. Stunners! ...this is quite a collection, have you thought about putting the images and story together in a Blurb book? Check it out, www.blurb.com Also that wonderful memory link works for sketching too, even speed sketching seems to cement the moment and so many of its details.

Robin, I am planning to put together a Blurb book of the project in the very near future.

  5. Hi Liz: I love the marsh painting also, and it is really special as I was there with you. The three of us really connected with this wonderful scene, each of us responding in different ways yet making beautiful paintings that are our truest selves. I just got the movie "Local Color" from the library about a young man's search for the heart of painting. You should check it out.

  7. I found the numbers 95 and 96 a little alarming too, as they mean the end of the project we've all enjoyed so much is fast approaching. I hope you'll call your Blurb book 100 paintings in 100 days in 2010 -- and paint another 100 paintings another year.

  8. All I can say is that you are a crazy-super plein air painter! I also LOVE #96! Whew! I learn a lot looking at your paintings, and studying them. #95 looks like around where I live, love it too. I will miss these paintings but will continue to follow where ever your painting path takes you. Thanks!

  11. I know just what you mean about looking at the painting months later and remembering being there, and all that goes with that. It's one of the nicest things about plein air painting. #96 is one of my very favorites so far, even without any mountains. Truly a lovely piece. Only four more to go! So sad.
